PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE TRIP

  1. Discuss what to expect the day of the field trip.
    Review schedule, procedures, transportation, and departure.
    Discuss the mechanics of checking in and out, permission slips, etc.
    Discuss dress and appearance.
    Have students identify questions they want to ask during the field trip.
    Discuss introduction etiquette and practice greeting business hosts with a handshake and eye contact.
    The field trip is a privilege; remind students to thank their host when they leave the site.
  2. Discuss jobs/careers in general
    Why people work Men and women in non-traditional roles
    Work ethic and responsibilities The tremendous variety of careers available
  3. Discuss the business that students will be visiting ­ talk about the product or service it provides and relate it to the students' lives.

AFTER THE FIELD TRIP

  1. Have students send the business host a thank you note, in addition to yours.
  2. Discuss the highlights and value of the experience with the class.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE THE FIELD TRIP

  1. Discuss the relationship between talents, abilities and interests.
  2. Explain career information available. Discuss the local job market.
  3. Have students talk about any experiences they have had in applying and holding a job.
  4. Look at the world after high school graduation.
    Discuss what employers want in an employee. Include the rights of employers and employees.
    Have students figure out what a good salary would be and how much it really costs a family to live.
  5. Using available career information, have students investigate one or more occupations that interest them. Make this a research assignment to be entered in a career portfolio.
  6. Have students practice filling out job applications.
  7. Have students interview their parents/family member or friend about their jobs.
